Illinois has legislation in place affecting current employers:

HB 1743 enacted on 8/13/2007
- Provides that it is a civil rights violation for an employer to request more or different documents than those required under federal law, or to refuse to honor documents that on their face reasonably appear to be genuine. For an employer participating in the E-Verify program, it is a civil rights violation to refuse to hire, to segregate, or to act with respect to recruitment, hiring, promotion, renewal of employment, discharge, or discipline without following the procedures under the E-Verify program.
